Oliva de Noel

Aux enchères cette semaine sur Conchologie,Inc Auction de Philippe Poppe, une magnifique et rare Oliva irisans striée.
Rappelle certaines formes de flaveola d'Indonésie ou d'irisans chrysoides.Le cal est bien visible.
Prix de départ 100€....

POSSIBLY THE MOST AMAZING IRISANS EVER

Oliva irisans is not a rare species, but it is a hard to find one. We found only a few dozen during our dives in the Visayas, and half of these were of the orange form "chrysoides". They were living together on a bottom between 25 and 30 meters - in pure white sand - with a few miniacea and quite some Oliva concinna. The night dives we collected these were spectacular as the white sand dunes in the black night were impressive, with every so many meters a crawling large Oliva turning up in the flashlights. Moments never to forget. These dives were dangerous: open sea, relatively deep and with strong currents. It is clear these Olives like fast currents. Occasionally we had to get up from the dive when the currents became too strong - like one is moving in a washing machine.

Some of the variant names of irisans:
- "oldi" stands for shells with lots of dark in the pattern.
- "chrysoides" is the orange form of irisans.
- "fordii" is the black color form of the irisans.

We found a little more than 175 figures of the fordii, but none of the shells figure came with a pattern of horizontal lines as seen in the unbelievable specimen. The slightly darker light orange as seen in the columellar white callus in the left image below also tends to confirm that this is an irisans. The spire is quite raised but this is not exceptional in irisans.

Estimation: A UNIQUE specimen. While in some specimen figured in the literature a "vague" movement of line forming can be rather felt than seen, this is the first specimen we know of with such a special pattern. The sky is the limit for the ones that like very rare and beautiful shells. We think this shell should go 500 euro, but find it still a bargain, as it's one of the most beautiful Oliva ever collected and no other specimens are known....

Ca va monter beaucoup plus haut, je suis prêt à le parier. C'est une pièce exceptionnelle.

Et 570 € pour un incrassata de 91,5mm, la 2° au monde paraît-il, pas très jolie.

Il a eu raison l' acheteur !!! L'excellence n' a pas de prix !!!
